## Module 5: Working with Biodiversity Data:

Graphs and Charts

##

Objective:

In this unit students will learn to visualize and understand biodiversity data by making a pie chart . This will be done by calculating the angle and then determining the percentage.

**Materials needed:**Protractor, ruler, calculator, poster board, markers or colored pencils.**Based on the pie chart to the left, which organism rules the earth?**

## Visualizing Data

There are about 1.5 million animal species currently recognized and about 80% are arthropods which is largely insects. New discoveries of arthropod species are ongoing and percentages shown are likely to increase as more species are discovered. Look for the section representing mammals which includes humans. It is clear that we are outnumbered!

In this assignment we will compare percentages as they appear in the number of identified species known in each animal group or

**taxa**. Students will then learn how to create a pie chart based on the provided data. You will first learn how to create one by hand and then how to create one using Excel.

In the next few exercises we’re going to create pie charts based on some biodiversity data or

**bioinformatics.**

**STEP 1**

Each group will be provided with a set of data for which to construct their charts.

- First add the data to get a total of all organisms.
- Then divide the number of each taxa or group by the total.
- To calculate angle multiply each percentage of each group by 360 degrees.

__So the formula would be__**Number of species /Total of all species x 360 =Angle**

For example

25,000 species/total of 90,000(360) = 100°

Draw the radius and measure the angles with a protractor.
